Barrow Hospital

Location : Barrow Gurney, now a derelict site of a former Bristol City mental hospital. Opened in May 1939, it closed quietly in 2006 after being identified in 2005 with the now infamous ‘dirtiest hospital in the country’ label.

This image was captured using a tripod-mounted Canon 5DmkII camera Canon TS-E 17mm f/4 L lens. Shift was used to keep the passageway upright. I used Liveview and 10x magnification to manually focus on the wall just in front of me. The camera was set to manual exposure mode, f/11, ISO 100 and daylight white balance. I then captured a series of 9 exposures from 1 second all the way to 1/250th second in one-stop increments. The RAW processing, creating and saving the HDRI was all done in Photoshop CS/5. The HDRI was then opened and tone mapped in Photomatix Pro before the final clean-up and enhancement work was done back in Photoshop.
